JASON BOURNE SEQUEL 2018 SERIES
It doesn’t stand out as one of the best of the series necessarily, but it is definitely not the worst. The car chases are impressive, as is a bathroom brawl and the very Lewis Gilbert-ish action finale. All around, Jason Bourne is a worthy sequel to the Bourne saga, one that successfully incorporates modern-day issues into an otherwise standard action film. Personal connections notwithstanding, the film has a certain “this week, on the Lisbeth Salander Show!” episodic feel, and it ends in a place ripe for further adventures. Stanfield plays it close to the vest, Hoeks makes a fine baddie, and the film does what it can, complete with a visually dazzling credit sequence, to reposition this as a possible ongoing action franchise.

We can debate whether or not a Salander movie fashioned after a Bourne or 007 sequel (which this is) would be more or less entertaining than one fashioned after an Equalizer movie, but the Batman/ Bourne/007 hybrid works. Salander is a more standard kick-ass heroine, and, refreshingly, the film’s characters don’t pretend to be aghast at her looks or her methods. Even while certain loyalties are left open in the initial reels, things play out relatively conventionally by the end. The second half, marked by some harsh violence, is a more conventional thriller, where Salander has to protect a key witness and stop the baddies. Much of this first 50 minutes or so is spent with one character or another in relative isolation, which limits the potential for chitchat. The first half is verbally sparse, trusting Pedro Luque’s widescreen images to tell its story and trusting its audience to get the big picture narrative even if little details slip by.

Yes, Blomkvist is involved too, but the movie clearly couldn’t care less about that relationship beyond is professional ramifications. Fans of Ed Brubaker’s superb Catwoman arc “Relentless” will spot the broad strokes, and Hoeks makes a strikingly cinematic villain. As telegraphed in the film’s prologue (and poster), this all involves Camilla Salander (Sylvia Hooks), Lisbeth’s estranged sister who was left behind in the care of their sexually abusive father after Lisbeth escaped. She gets drawn into the workings of a shadowy group of supervillains known as the Spider Society. Hot on her tail is Lakeith Stanfield as an NSA agent tracking down the stolen program, while our hero eventually finds herself caught up in, yes, a metaphorical spider’s web. But things go awry, the program ends up in the wind and the chase is on. A fired agent (Stephen Merchant) has recruited Salander to steal and destroy the program out of fears over its potential for carnage.
By the end of the first reel, we are knee-deep in a plot concerning an NSA program that can access the world’s nuclear codes. Following the success of the fifth Bourne movie, producer Frank.
Fashioning herself as a fly-by-night hero who avenges women who have been hurt by powerful men, the opening scenes are the only such offerings we get of this Salander’s unique hobby. The Girl in the Spider’s Web is different enough to stand side-by-side alongside both the 2011 Rooney Mara/Daniel Craig epic and the Noomi Rapace-starring trilogy.Ĭlaire Foy makes a fine and subtle Salander, reintroducing us to the activist hacker, professional researcher and periodic vigilante in an opening scene that brings to mind The Equalizer. This lean and mean (around 40 minutes shorter) thriller is closer in spirit to the unapologetic airport paperback thrills of the original novels. The 2011 adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, both a remake of the 2010 Swedish flick and an adaptation of the late Stieg Larsson’s original novel, was an artsy, grimly prestigious and ridiculously expensive ($90 million) thriller.
